The Sweeney Art Gallery is an artistic laboratory that engages diverse audiences with exhibitions and programs that are committed to experimentation, innovation, and the exploration of art in our time. The Sweeney places a special emphasis on inspiring projects that explore new ideas and materials and re-envision the relationship between art and life. Established on the University of California-Riversideís campus in 1963, the Sweeney moved to UCR ARTSblock in April of 2006 and plays a special role in contributing to the artistic spirit of the campus and the community at large. At the center of the Galleryís mission is an appreciation for the role of artists developing the intellectual and cultural life of society.

The Riverside Arts Walk on First Thursdays presents over twenty participating arts venuesóart museums, galleries, and studiosóopen free to the public every month. These participating locations present an eclectic mix of visual art mediums and styles, in addition to special art/musical performances, exhibitions, tours, and art-making demonstrations.

Attendees may begin their walk at any participating sitesóor get started at one of the two coordinating sites: the Riverside Art Museum (3425 Mission Inn Ave.) or the Riverside Community Arts Association (3870 Lemon St.). Some of the other participating sites are: UCR/California Museum of Photography, Riverside Municipal Museum, Mission Inn Museum, and the Riverside Public Library, Division 9 Gallery, Riverside Visitor's Center, People's Gallery, Back to the Grind, and Exposures Photo Gallery.

Program: First Sundays

First Sunday October - May, 1-4 PM

First Sundays provides high-quality, no-cost activities for families interested in having fun while enjoying historic Downtown Riverside's arts and cultural resources.

Founded approximately ten years ago, this award-winning community event has successfully provided a wide range of art-making activities, performances, and programs for thousands of children and families in Riverside. Programs run eight months a year from October to May on the first Sunday of each month from 1-4 PM at Riverside Public Library, UCR/California Museum of Photography, Sweeney Art Gallery, Riverside Metropolitan Museum, Mission Inn Museum and Riverside Art Museum.

Program: Gluck Fellows Program

Established to create an opportunity for UCR faculty and students to extend their creative and performative talents to the broader community.

Each year, the Gluck Fellows Program of the Arts provides fellowships to exceptional UC Riverside undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and visiting guest artists to conduct arts-related presentations, performances, and workshops in Riverside County schools, residential facilities for elderly care and community centers. Participating departments include Art, Creative Writing, Dance, History of Art, Music, and Theatre, as well as the Sweeney Art Gallery and the UCR/California Museum of Photography.

Directions

From UC Riverside Take University Avenue westbound to Downtown Riverside. The gallery is located on the Main Street Pedestrian Mall one block west of Orange Street. Los Angeles and Ontario From the 10 freeway east, take the 15 freeway south bound to the 60 freeway east. Exit Market Street and turn right. Turn left on University Avenue. The first signal light into University Avenue is the Main Street Pedestrian Mall. The gallery is located on the right hand corner of University Avenue and Main Street.

Orange County Take freeway 91 East to Riverside. Exit University Avenue. Turn left on University Avenue. Proceed through University Avenue passing Lime, Lemon and Orange Streets. The gallery is located on the Main Street Pedestrian Mall one block west of Orange Street.

Palm Springs Take Interstate 10 West to the junction with 60 Freeway. Take 60 Freeway west. Exit Market Street and turn left. Turn left on University Avenue. The first signal light into University Avenue is the Main Street Pedestrian Mall. The gallery is located on the right hand corner of University Avenue and Main Street.

San Diego Take the 15 North freeway to the 215 North. Take the 60 Freeway west. Turn left on University Avenue. The first signal light into University Avenue is the Main Street Pedestrian Mall. The gallery is located on the right hand corner of University Avenue and Main Street.
